1998 £5 BU Coin Pack – Prince Charles 50th Birthday

On 14th November 1948, Prince Charles Philip Arthur George was born at Buckingham Palace, the eldest son of Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh.

In 1952 he became heir apparent on the accession of the Queen and in 1958 he was created the twenty-first Prince of Wales. 

The Prince of Wales and The Trust that bears his name are prominently featured on the reverse of the crown to celebrate the Prince's fiftieth birthday.  The design was obtained as a result of a limited competition among invited artists and is the work of the distinguished portrait painter Michael Noakes.  The design features a portrait of the Prince of Wales with key words relating to the work of The Trust in the background.
