The National Park of American Samoa quarter is the first in 2020 and 51st overall in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program and has been minted at the United States Mint at Denver and has never been placed into circulation.

Located some 2,600 miles southwest of Hawaii, the National Park of American Samoa is one of the most remote national parks. It includes sections of three islands - Tutuila, Ta'ū, and Ofu. Almost all of the land area of these volcanic islands - from the mountaintops to the coast - is tropical rainforest. It totals 13,500 acres, of which 4,000 are under water.

The obverse design features the familiar image of George Washington by John Flanagan, used on the quarter since 1932.

The reverse design depicts a Samoan fruit bat mother hanging in a tree with her pup. The image evokes the remarkable care and energy that this species puts into their offspring. The design is intended to promote awareness to the species’ threatened status due to habitat loss and commercial hunting. The National Park of American Samoa is the only park in the United States that is home to the Samoan fruit bat.
