To commemorate the introduction into circulation of a new, smaller five pence coin in 1990, the Royal Mint is issuing a maximum of 35,000 silver Proof two-coin sets containing the last of the original five pence coins and the first of the new.

The reverse of each of the coins features the Badge of Scotland, a thistle royally crowned.  This design by Christopher Ironside was first used on the five pence coin in 1968.  The obverse shows the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf.

The designs are perfectly complemented by the Proof quality of striking.  From the seventeeth century Proof coins have epitomised the minter's art.  To achieve this standard of excellence, specially selected blanks and highly polished dies are brought together in an enviornment where temperature and humidity are closely monitored.

The blanks are struck with a least two separate blows, the force of each blow being as much as 200 tonnes to ensure the highest possible quality.  Each coin is then closely examined by trained quality control inspectors.

Specifications

These legal tender five pence coins are struck in sterling (.925) silver to Proof quality.  The original five pence piece weighs 5.65 grammes and measures 23.59 mm in diameter.  The new five pence piece weighs3.25 grammes and measures 18.00mm in diameter.  Only 35,000 sets have been issued for worldwide distribution.
