2017 (P) Effigy Mounds National Monument (Iowa)

This 2017 Effigy Mounds National Monument quarter is minted at the United States Mint at Philadelphia and has never been placed into circulation.

The first United States Mint quarter release for 2017 depicts Effigy Mounds National Monument in Iowa. It is the thirty-sixth issued as part of the Mint’s program of America the Beautiful Quarters® which runs for eleven years until 2021.

The Effigy Mounds, located in the Effigy Mounds National Monument of Iowa, are a group of over 200 mounds built by Native Americans. These mounds were used for burial, ceremonies and sometimes lodging. There are 31 mounds that are shaped like reptiles, birds and other mammals where the term "effigy" originates.

Iowa’s 2017 Effigy Mounds Quarter was released into general circulation on 6th February 2017 and the design for the national monument was created by Richard Masters and sculpted by Renata Gordon, it depicts an aerial view of mounds in the Marching Bear Group. Surrounding inscriptions read: "EFFIGY MOUNDS," "IOWA," "2017," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
