The Keltoi or Celts came from the heartlands of Europe and during their expansion moved to Britain and subsequently to Northern Ireland.  They excelled as craftsmen, particularly in metalwork, and developed the distinctive art style found on the Broighter collar.  It is these people and Northern Ireland's rich cultural past that are recalled in the intricate reverse design of the 1996 £1 coin, the third in a series representing the four constituent parts of the United Kingdom.

Created by Norman Sillman, the reverse depicts an ancient Irish-style cross, richly decorated with spiral and geometric symbols inspired by the Book of Kells and upon which is superimposed a representation of the Broighter collar.

At the centre of the new design lies a pimpernel, a familiar sight in Northern Ireland.

The one pound coin is in a presentation folder and is of uncirculated quality and has been carefully handled to avoid damage.
