The English Oak is steeped in history and legend.  Forests of oak are a reminder of folk heroes such as Robin Hood, while “Hearts of Oak” conveys a sense of the centuries-old debt to the English Navy, which protected an island Kingdom from invasion.

The English coin is the last in a four year series of one pound coins whose reverse designs represent the constituent parts of the United Kingdom.  The first was the 1984 Scottish coin which shows a thistle, following in 1985 by the Welsh coin, which features a leek.  Last year Northern Ireland was represented by a flax plant.

The reverse of the 1987 English one pound coin shows an oak tree encircled by the Royal Diadem.  The design is the work of silversmith Leslie Durbin.

On the edge of the coin appears the Latin inscription DECUS TUTAMEN, meaning ‘an ornament and a safeguard’.  The Llantrisant mintmark, a cross-crosslet, is also featured.

The obverse features the recently adopted Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The one pound coin is in a presentation folder and is of uncirculated quality and has been carefully handled to avoid damage.
