In 1989 the Royal Mint issued a maximum of 25,000 silver Proof £1 coins for worldwide distribution.  The coin features on its reverse the floral emblem of Scotland, the thistle, as first used on the 1984 pound coin.  The work of the renowned silversmith Leslie Durbin, the design shows the Scottish thistle encircled by the Royal Diadem  The Latin motto of the Order of the Thistle  NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT ("No one provokes me with impunity") appears on the edge of the coin.

The obverse features Raphael Maklouf's elegant portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.  The portrait is surrounded by the Royal Style and Titles in Latin "Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith".

Specifications

This £1 coin is struck in sterling (.925) silver Proof quality.  It weighs 9.50 grammes and measures 22.50 millimetres in diameter.

The 1989 silver proof one pound coin is encapsulated and housed in the original box, complete with certificate of authenticity.
