LIMITED EDITION - THE PATH OF LIFE

In order to increase international awareness of the world’s aging population and the shift in perceptions and government policies required to support this trend, the United Nations declared 1999 as the International Year of Older Persons.  The resolution signed 1st October 1998 calls for solidarity, respect and mutual exchange between generations – a strong and enduring partnership that will allow the world’s elders to enjoy their golden years with dignity, self-fulfilment and independence.

In Canada, the contributions of its elders and their significance to the nation’s demographic profile cannot be denied.  Today, seniors enjoy better health, great vitality and will continue to play an increasingly active role in Canadian society.  As a founding UN member-state, Canada has embraced the international resolution with a domestic initiative to create a “society for all ages”.

The 1999 silver dollar is the first numismatic design to be inspired by a commemorative stamp.  Developed by two Canadian talents, artist Shelagh Armstrong-Hodgson and designer Paul Hodgson, the reverse of the coin portrays a man and a woman, in their golden years, travelling the path of life.  The light, airy lines of the trees evoke a sense of movement – the new vitality of this colourful period of life.

The coin comes encapsulated and presented in an elegant black case.  It is protected by a Royal Canadian Mint branded beauty box and accompanied by a booklet of authenticity.
