Order of St John of Jerusalem
The symbol of the Order, a white eight-pointed cross on a black background, is an international symbol of first aid. It is known as the logo of St John Ambulance, emblazoned on the sides of ambulances and on the uniforms of its highly trained volunteers. However, the eight-pointed cross was also worn on the robes of those first Brother Knights in the hospital in
The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem is an honour only bestowed upon deserving members who have demonstrated loyalty and service to the organisation.
The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem was incorporated by Royal Charter of Queen Victoria and granted the epithet Venerable in 1926 and Most in 1955; despite its title, it has no connection with the Knights Hospitallers of Jerusalem, who were subsequently based at Rhodes and Malta and now have their headquarters in Rome.
From Serving Brother/Sister, volunteers can progress to Officer, Commander and ultimately Knight after a lifetime of dedication. St. John also recognises bravery in the community by issuing Lifesaving Awards to deserving citizens.
In 1926 the Order was re-organised into five Classes like certain other Orders. A sixth class was added later. Both men and women are eligible for membership. Her Majesty the Queen is the Sovereign Head of the Order.
