1998 Silver Proof Two-Coin Set - Ladies of Freedom

In 1998 the British Royal Mint and the United States Mint came together to combine two exquisite silver Proof coins, the United Kingdom Britannia £2 and the United States Liberty $1, featuring legendary figures that have long held celebrated positions on their respective coinage.

£2 Britannia - The figure of Britannia, universally recognised as the personification of Britain, has for three centuries graced the United Kingdom's coinage, her appearance reflecting not only Britain's naval history, but also alluding to Britain's island status. Today's elegant portrayal was created by Philip Nathan for the gold Britannia's of 1987.  Standing proud and defiant, her hair and gown streaming in the wind, Britannia gazes resolutely across the shore, while in her outstretched right hand she clasps Neptune's trident to symbolise her sovereignty over the sea.  For 1998 this much admired designed adorns the reverse of the Britannia silver Proof £2 coin for the first time.  Featured on the obverse is the new portrait of Her Majesty the Queen by sculptor and medallist Ian Rank-Broadley .

$1 Liberty - Liberty, as with Britannia on the coinage of the United Kingdom, has been represented in various forms on the United States coinage during the last two centuries,  The classic design created in 1916 by Adolph A Weinman is brought to life on the obverse of this $1 coin for 1998 as she stands in full stride, enveloped in the folds of the United States flag with her right hand extended and branches of laurel and the oak in her left hand.  Combined with Liberty and perhaps, almost equally symbolic of the United States, the reverse design features John Mercanti's celebrated interpretation of the heraldic eagle.  also incorporated in the design are the worlds E PLUIBUS UNUM meaning "Out of Many, One" referring to the union of states and, as on all modern coins of the United State,s the motto IN GOLD WE TRUST is also present.
