SHAPING A NATIONAL IDENTITY

The 1996 Masterpieces in Silver commemorates the performances of artists, writers, and sports people that took Australians' breath away; the performances and events, that hold privileged positions in the shaping of Australia's national identity: artist Tom Roberts, writer Henry Lawson, the Stockman, singer Dame Nellie Meloba, and Horse Racing.  Such is the panorama of complex forces that have given focus to the national heart and mind.

This 1997 Masterpieces in Silver set is one of 20,000 legal tender proof coin sets minted by the Royal Australian Mint.

The Mint's talented engravers, Vladimir Gottwald and Wojciech Pietranik, designed and sculptured the reverse designs.  The obverse carries the traditional portait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf.  Each of the five coins, struck on specially prepared blanks using hand-polished dies, are finished to the Mint's strict quality guidelines. The finished product has a mirror-like flat surface complimented by a delicately frosted raised design.

The coins are beautifully presented in the Royal Australian Mint original box, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and outer box.
