ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE

The 1998 Silver Proof Dollar, designed by artist Adeline Halvorson commemorates the 125th anniversary of the founding of the North-West Mounted Police.  At the time of confederation in 1867, Canada consisted of only four eastern provinces.  In 1870, the government acquired a huge expanse of land from the Hudson’s Bay Company.  Plans to open the region to settlement required the suppression of the whiskey trade and establishment of peaceful relations with the Native peoples.  In May 1873, the North-West Mounted Police was created to bring law, order and Canadian authority to the western frontier.

The reverse of the coin features a mounted member of that early force which, in 1920, was transformed into the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.   The coin comes encapsulated and presented in a dark green case. It is protected by a Royal Canadian Mint branded beauty box and it is accompanied by a booklet of authenticity.
