The Royal Australian Mint first released a 'Masterpieces in Silver' set in 1988 to mark Australia's Bicentennial year, each of the new commemorative coins issued that year were produced in proof silver.
'The Masterpieces in Silver' series became so popular it is still issued today, largely due to the unique beauty and appeal of the coins when struck in silver.
